The series uses “mockumentary” techniques to depict the fictional, reality television-style adventures of enthusiastic professional critic Forrest MacNeil, who hosts a TV show called “Review” in which he engages in any life experience his viewers ask him to, to find out if that life experience “is any good”. Afterward, Forrest formally rates each life experience in-studio, on a one-to-five-star scale. However, Forrest’s compulsive curiosity and uncompromising commitment to the show unexpectedly backfire in ways that increasingly destroy his life as he is requested to review ‘stealing’, ‘drug addiction’, ‘being a racist’, ‘getting divorced’, ‘getting revenge’, and ‘running from the law.

When Daniel returns to his hometown, Rosehaven, to take over his family’s troubled real estate business, he’s surprisingly joined by his best (city) friend Emma – who’s on the run from a marriage that didn’t last the honeymoon. Between Daniel’s crippling anxiety and Emma’s exuberant irresponsibility will they be able to save the business? It seems unlikely, but it will be fun to watch them try. As the social climate changed in the 1980s, the show’s writing became less edgy, and as the girls became adults, the innovation of the original premise — a divorced mother raising teenage children — was lost. The show’s nine years give it the second-longest tenure of any Lear-developed sitcom under its original name, after The Jeffersons.

Outsourced was filmed at Radford Studios in Studio City, Los Angeles, California.

When the renewal of the show was not announced with renewal of other NBC shows, the cast and crew started a campaign for fans of the show to request its renewal. On May 13, 2011, NBC announced that Outsourced was cancelled.
